Even free Wordpress
Blogs and Themes can stand from the pack with a dash of creativity coupled with
few personal touches.
WordPress is notable
for having a myriad of features that can help bloggers make the most out of
their pages. Free themes may not be endowed with the same range of tools that
you can get from operating on your server, but there are easy ways to tweak the
layout and structure according to your preferences.
Changing the Header
Creating graphics that
can be uploaded and overwrite the existing header image is the fastest way to
modify the upper most part of the page. The trick is to use to reliable
software in making images, name the file similar to that of the existing header
and upload the graphic.
1. Find the file name
of the header graphic from a free WordPress blog by activating the selected
theme on the website. Right click the header and click “view image” or “view
background image.” After the picture loads in a separate tab, right click
and choose “Properties.” From the window that popped up, the file name of the
image is displayed.
2. Get the dimension
of the image from the same pop up window. It is imperative to take note of the
dimension of the header as this will be your guide in sizing the customized
graphic.
3. Create a new header
graphic. Paint is the easiest program to use, although the quality of the
output tends to be pixelized. Experts recommend the latest versions of
Photoshop and Correl.
4. One the image is
ready, log in via FTP and upload the graphic in the theme folder. Make sure
that the old header is overwritten and replaced by the new file.
Customizing Fonts
CSS stylesheet is your best bet in changing the style, size and color of
the font. Truth be told, the interface of the program is a bit daunting to
first-timers. This is not surprising as even the most experienced designers
sometimes get confused with the loads of tools and features.
You have to remember
that Cascading Style Sheets apply in any rule set for the body (text of the
blog). In changing the style of the contents, it is therefore a must to
determine if the free Wordpress Theme has an existing set in the stylesheet.
You can do this by looking at the HTML code of the site: click “View” then go
to Page Source. Look for codes formatted as: <div class=”pink”>.
Transfer the class in
the CSS stylesheet by clicking Appearance then Editor. The default setting will
automatically be moved to the style sheet.
To change the style,
color and size of the fonts, locate the same class in the CSS stylesheet and
select the preferred setting. Apply them in the blog and you’ll be good to go.
