Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal release

The thing that we have been waiting for so long has finally happened – new Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal has been released and is now available for download! In every release Ubuntu developers try to accentuate some idea. Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal is no exception. In this release developers have emphasized close integration with online services, thus trying to erase the distinction between the Internet and a PC.

A lot of changes that were made in the beta-versions of Ubuntu 12.10 that were released earlier have been included in a stable release. Here’re the main changes in a new release.

Unity 6.8

Standard Ubuntu theme has been changed and upgraded to a 6.8 version. A lot of new functions have appeared. For example, Previews function. It allows you to view the files right in the Dash. Another new function is Web Apps. With its help you can turn sites into applications.

Great addition to the Web Apps app is another app from Canonical – Online Accounts. The idea of this function is pretty simple – to unite web sites and Ubuntu itself. For example, if you use Twitter, you may authorize in Online Accounts and after that any application that needs your Twitter account won’t ask you for your Twitter login and password, but will take it from Online Accounts (with your permission, surely). This function seems to be really useful!

In general, for Ubuntu 12.10 release Unity has been significantly changed. For example, Unity 2D theme has been deleted and replaced with special video driver llvmpipe. Another example is Amazon and Ubuntu One Music Store search modification. In Unity 6.8 Canonical has added the function of turning off of online search.

Also, there’re a lot of smaller changes, like adding a photo lens, a social lens, new Sync Menu, update for Messaging Menu, and so on.

Other changes

One of the most obvious changes is new wallpapers in Ubuntu 12.10. Both a standard and other wallpapers have been presented, though one of them has been deleted due to the copyright problems.

One of the most interesting innovations in Quantal Quetzal is Unity Greeter, a function that provides connection with remote desktops. There’re three ways of connection available: ICA (Citrix), RDP and VMWare View.

It’s also worth mentioning that developers have decided not to use the latest Nautilus 3.6 version of a file manager due to its narrowed functional and have left Nautilus 3.4.

As Ubuntu distributive requires more and more disk space, it was decided to stop using LiveCD (though server version will still be available on CDs). Ubuntu image is now 800Mb.

There will be no graphic system on the basis of Wayland and no composite Weston server until Ubuntu 13.04 (approximately). This question will be discussed at the Ubuntu developers summit that will take place from October, 29, to November, 1, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Another not very important change that is still worth mentioning. In Ubuntu 12.10 the way to reset Compiz and Unity settings has been changed.

Updates

Ubuntu developers promote full switch to Python 3. The apps on Python 2 are still supported, but you’re strongly recommended to move them to a Python 3. The kernel in 12.10 is Linux Kernel 3.5.4, though a lot of users expected it to be 3.6. Standard apps have been updated to the next versions:
  • ·         GNOME 3.5.92 (some components were upgraded to 3.6);
  • ·         GRUB2 2.00;
  • ·         Xorg 1.13.0;
  • ·         Mesa 9.0;
  • ·         OpenJDK 7.

If you don’t want to re-install your Ubuntu, you may simply update it to Ubuntu 12.10, though I’d recommend re-installing it as there may appear some problems while updating.
