Tips for Bike Riders and Lovers

Saravana | 5:01 AM |

Every scooter or motorcycle rider would have had at least one small accident on our Indian roads. Road accidents involving two wheelers have increased by huge numbers in recent years. While the increasing traffic, speeding, not following traffic rules and even drunken driving can be attributed for the increase in road accidents, following just a few tips below will make a huge difference to our safety.

One major reason for accident rate among two wheeler users is that not many go to driving schools to learn riding. Many car users learn driving through driving schools. However, bike users just graduate from bicycles in their school or college days itself. They do not receive informed bike riding tips from many people. Some of them are so over confident that they do not even try to get themselves a driving license until they are caught by cops.

Drivespark.com always supports safe driving and here are some tips that will not only ensure the safety of your life but also of other users.

  • Always lift the side stand before starting your bike. Do not feel this is an unwanted advice as several accidents have been caused just by the protruding side stand
  • Do not overtake a vehicle before ascertaining there is enough space in front of it. Do not overtake when the number of vehicles coming in from the opposite direction are high. Many bike users have lost their limbs and lives while trying to overtake on busy roads.
  • Do not use your bike when you are very angry, sad or emotionally disturbed. This will affect your style of driving and your attention will also be low. Always compose yourself, take a break and only then start your journey.
  • Do not drive fast on sand and loose soil on the side of the road. Tyres tend to slip when you apply brakes on such surfaces. Avoid driving on sand as much as possible.
  • Do not apply brakes suddenly when going fast. First apply the clutch and then slowly apply the front brake followed by the rear brake.
  • Never forget to show the turn indicators when taking a turn. It is better to slowdown and use the indicators than giving an opportunity to other vehicles to crash in to you.
  • Never follow big vehicles such as trucks and buses to closely. You will not have sufficient time to respond in case they apply the brakes suddenly. Always maintain a reasonable gap between your bike and the vehicle in the front.
  • Your bike will handle to respond to your inputs when you have a pillion rider. Always understand how your bike handles when you have a passenger behind you when driving. You will notice that braking distances and turning radii will be much different when you have a passenger behind you.
  • Before going for top speeds, always determine your bike has sufficient stopping capability. Know how your brakes behave before accelerating. Check your brakes and brake fluids regularly to keep them in optimum condition.
  • Always use a helmet even while taking short trips. Do not use helmets that look like hard hats as they do not offer protection to your head, neck and face in case of a collision. Also make use of other safety accessories such as knee caps, shoulder guards and crash guards.

Always remember there is someone waiting for you at home before undertaking a risky move. Hope these tips will help you enjoy a happy and safe ride :)
