With
the advent of the IFA 2012 expo, which showcased an array of smartphone
and tablet launches, moving ahead this September, the tech enthusiasts
will witness release of numerous breathtaking launches in the history of
technology world.
A
couple of them have already been outed this Wednesday, when Nokia and
Motorola unleashed their new flagship models at different press events
in New York City. While, the Motorola unveiled Droid Razr HD alongside
Droid Razr Maxx HD and Droid Razr M, the Finnish handset manufacturer
brought out the second generation Lumia smartphones with Windows Phone 8
including Lumia 820 and the highly rumored Lumia 920. Packed with the
likes of Pureview technology and Qi wireless charging features, Lumia
920 has landed with vibrant colors and is expected to threaten the
throne of the hottest selling smartphone in the market right now –
Samsung Galaxy S3. The smartphone which made a soaring sales of 10
million in only two months of its launch.
Lets
check out which one of the two will actually sustain in the smartphone
war, the Android latest version, Galaxy S3 or the Windows Phone 8
powered Lumia 920. Here is a head-to-head comparison between the duo.

Display & Dimension:
Measuring 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm and weighing 185 grams, Lumia 920 has a
thicker and heavier profile that Galaxy S3 measuring 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6
mm and weighing around 133 grams.
Coming
to the display, Lumia 920 packs a 4.5 inch IPS display with PureMotion
HD+ technology. The capacitive touchscreen display has 720 x 1280 pixel
resolution and 326 ppi pixel density approximately.
On the other hand, Galaxy S3 sports a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 306 ppi pixel density approximately.
Processor:Lumia 920 is equipped with a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chipset, dual core 1.5GHz Krait processor and Adreno 225.
On
the other hand, Galaxy S3 is equipped with the Exynos 4412 Quad
chipset, quad core 1.4GHz Cortex A9 processor and Mali-400MP GPU.
Operating System:
Here comes the contradicting aspect of the comparison as the Lumia 920
is based on Windows Phone 8 OS and Galaxy S3 is based on Android 4.0.4
Ice Cream Sandwich OS. However, the latter is upgradeable to the Android
4.1.1 Jelly Bean OS soon.
The
new Windows Phone 8 OS will boast features like dynamic Live Tile
Information, Twitter and LinkedIn integration in the People hub,
Facebook-events integrated calendar, threaded email conversations
support, visual voicemail, Outlook tasks support and much more. Other
features of the OS include Shazam-like audio recognition, turn-by-turn
Bing Maps navigation with voice guidance, Skydrive and Office 365
documents synchronization with PDF support, Microsoft Lync support,
animated picture tiles, People/Groups gallery with Skydrive and Facebook
sync, People Hub-integrated photo management, Zune SmartDJ multimedia
mix support, video aspect ratio control capability while playback and
more.
In
comparison, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has many new features like Project
Butter, which offers faster, smoother and more responsive performance.
The other features include enhances accessibility with the on-screen
navigation buttons, update to Android notifications allowing them to be
expanded and collapsed with a pinch, resizable App Widgets
functionality, high resolution contact photos, updated Android Beam app,
which will make sharing of images, videos and other content easier.
Camera:
On the camera optics front, both the gadgets have an 8.7MP rear camera
equipped with features like autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging. However,
the Nokia offering features the PureView camera technology, which is an
added advantage.
Futher, Lumia 920 has a 1.2MP front camera while Galaxy S3 has a 1.9MP front camera.
Storage:
Lumia 920 has 32GB internal memory and 1GB RAM while Galaxy S3 comes in
three variants – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB each with 1GB RAM.
Moreover, Galaxy S3 has an external micro SD card slot for expandable memory capacity, Lumia 920 lacks one.
Connectivity:
On the connectivity front, both are packed with similar features such
as HSDPA, HSUPA, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi
hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP and EDR, micro USB 2.0 and USB on the go.
Battery:
Lumia 920 packs a 2,000 mAh Li-ion battery, which provides 10 hours
talk time and 400 hours standby while Galaxy S3 has a 2,100 mAh Li-ion
battery, which offers 11.5 hours talk time and 790 hours standby.
Verdict
When
it comes to Lumia 920, the rear camera is good compared to the Galaxy
opponent, however Galaxy S3 has a better front camera.
At
the same time, both the smartphones are loaded with a plethora of
applications related to the later iterations of their respective
operating systems. Hence, it is completely the buyers’ choice whether
they want to try the new Windows Phone 8 skin UI or stick on to the
Android operating system.
