Google's $99 Chromebook laptop offer receives tremendous response

US teachers have flooded school-centric charity website DonorsChoose.org to snap up Chrome notebook computers Google made available to classrooms for just $99 each.

DonorsChoose said Tuesday that it was no longer taking Chromebook requests from instructors since the allotted supply was exhausted due to the "tremendous response" to the offer.

DonorsChoose is a website where people can donate money to back class projects or provide gear needed in cash-strapped schools based on needs or goals laid out by teachers.

Google agrees to acquire Canadian startup BufferBox

Google has agreed to acquire Canadian start-up BufferBox, which manages self-service parcel lockers to help consumers avoid missed deliveries, the companies said Friday.

 

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The company began with a pilot project in Waterloo, Ontario, and has been rolling out a network of pick-up stations across the Toronto area.

Google updates iOS Search app with enhanced voice capabilities: Hands-on

Google is often referred to as the search giant and for good reason. The company is always experimenting with its search features to deliver the most accurate and relevant results, both on the web and through its apps. 

Speaking of relevant and accurate results, the latest update to the Google Search app for iOS brings improved voice recognition capabilities, which until now was appreciated only on its Android counterpart. 

The voice search inherits features from Google Now including the look, sounds and a voice assistant that reads the query results back to you, which are all definitely welcome additions. So, is the refreshed voice search app a threat to Apple's native Siri? We find out.

Apple set to take on Google, Amazon with iPad mini

Apple Inc will host an event on October 23 where it is expected to unveil a smaller iPad that will take on the less expensive devices offered by Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The Federal Trade Commission is raising the ante in its antitrust confrontation with Google with the commission staff preparing a recommendation that the government sue the search giant.

The government's escalating pursuit of Google is the most far-reaching antitrust investigation of a corporation since the landmark federal case against Microsoft in the late 1990s. The agency's central focus is whether Google manipulates search results to favour its own products, and makes it harder for competitors and their products to appear prominently on a results page.

Two Big Parners Google, Samsung combined to produce Nexus 10 tablet: Report

Google seems to be planning to release the first 10-inch Nexus tablet, reports CNET. The search giant has reportedly partnered with Samsung to build this device.

According to CNET, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch Richard Shim claims that this alleged Nexus 10 tablet will come display boasting of pixel density more than Apple's new iPad. The new iPad features 264 PPI on the 9.7-inch 2,048x1,536p retina display and Google's upcoming tablet will top it with a 2,560x1,600p display with 299 PPI.

Google reportedly working on Maps for iOS, but release months away
